The New York Yankees
The New York Yankees currently have the highest payroll in major league baseball. The reason the Yankees have the highest payroll is mainly because they have the three highest paid players in the game, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, and Jason Giambi. All three of these players make over 20 million dollars a season. The Yankees also have 22 players with contracts that total over 1 million dollars per season which is unbelievable. This statistic is unbelievable when we look at the Florida Marlins team salaries, which only has two players that make over 1 million dollars per season.
The Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox have the second highest payroll with just over 120 million dollars. The Red Sox have three of the highest paid players in major league baseball in Manny Ramirez, Curt Schilling, and Jason Varitek. There are no players on the Red Sox that make over 20 million dollars a year, but they do have 19 players that make over a million dollars a year. The reason for both the Red Sox and Yankees having such high salaries is in part to the fact that they are both in the same division. The competition between the two teams increased both of their teams salaries with added pressure to beat the opposing team.
The Los Angeles Angels
The Los Angeles Angels rank 3rd amoung major league teams in team salaries. Their current payroll just tops over 103 million dollars this year. The Angels main money makers are Bartolo Colon, Vladimir Guerrero, and Garret Anderson who each make over 10 million dollars a season. The Angels surprising only have 14 players with a contract over a million dollars a season. The reason the Angels can afford such a high payroll is because they play in Los Angeles. Being able to play in a city like Los Angeles definately helps, because it is easy to draw a steady fan base to pay for the players salaries.
