Healthcare has always been a presence in my life through my family members who work in various aspects of the industry. I am from the northeast suburbs of Philadelphia and I came to Ithaca College on a scholarship as a Pre-professional for Health Science with the intent to go to medical school. During my freshman year, I explored the economics and politics of healthcare while completing some of the basic sciences required for a premed major. While the science of medicine has always intrigued me, my passion developed on the business end of healthcare.
I was shocked by the inefficiency, undercoverage, and high costs of our system compared to the actual quality of care that is often received. With the release of Medicare D, it became very evident that this country will soon be facing a drastic change especially in the tide of the aging baby-boomers. After completing an internship with an insurance brokerage firm, I was certain that I wanted to work improving health policy. Now that my senior year has arrived and I am entering the workforce, healthcare reform is on the forefront of the upcoming presidential election. I hope to serve as an activist and support system for healthcare consumers in this country, enabling them to become more educated about their options. It is the behavior of the consumer that is going to change the problems that have become embedded in our system.
I believe that my enthusiasm to learn about the subject coupled with my ambition will lead way to my great potential in the healthcare industry. My ability to communicate well with others and my tendency to fall into leadership roles have always been some of my strong points and have enabled me to adapt to many circumstances as well as overcome numerous challenges. I am eager to enter the professional world of healthcare where I can apply my passion, relay my ideas, and most importantly pursue my dreams to enable others and of improving the healthcare system in the United States! |
