Standard 6: Assessment
An effective teacher can demonstrate the ability to develop and utilize a variety of assessment tools and techniques designed to evaluate student learning and performance, provide feedback, and shape future lesson planning, programs, and currricula.
It is important to get as much feedback as possible both during and after a lesson, to determine what students are walking away with. Although they are important, summative assessment simply does not provide me with enough feedback. I need to know that my students are learning the concepts and skills they need to before the test. I use informal questioning during my classes along with various types of every pupil response to determine student understanding on a daily basis.
I believe that if I assess really well throughout the unit then I will have been able to more effectively respond to student needs, resulting in more success for summative assessments. I have worked with and created my own traditional assessments such as quizzes and tests. However, I am also very interested in other authentic types of assessment such as projects, unit problems, and student presentations.
